Boroko is a residential and commercial suburb close to the Port Moresby International Airport, Town and the CBD and the center of government in Waigani.
It was home to a growing expatriate community in the colonial days and had a bustling commercial center. But the area lost its popularity in the 1990s which led to an exodus of residents and the exit of a number of local businesses.
But an air of optimism has returned to the suburb following the country’s successful hosting of the 2015 Pacific Games, FIFA 2016 U-20 Women’s World Cup and the RLIF 2017 Rugby League World Cup. World-class soccer and rugby league facilities were built at the Bisini sporting ground at Boroko. The suburb is also home to most of PNG’s top healthcare providers.
The Boroko commercial center has Bank South Pacific, Westpac and ANZ Bank branches and is home to a PNG Fire Service station and the Boroko police station, where you can find the city’s metropolitan commander. The Brian Bell Plaza, Stop N Shop (Boroko) and the Garden City multistory building are located nearby, offering shoppers variety in terms of groceries and merchandise.
Today there are different property types and design found in Boroko. There are apartments, units, duplexes and houses that are for sale and located within the vicinity of modern amenities and facilities. Properties in this part of Port Moresby are markedly lower than those selling in upmarket suburbs such as Town.
