PNG follows similar public holidays as most Christian countries, with Christmas, New Year and Easter being held on the same date as other Western countries. 

Generally speaking, if a public holiday falls on a Sunday, Monday becomes a holiday. 

 

Papua New Guinea became an independent country on 16th September 1975, and this is one of the most important public holidays in the calendar year. PNG flags being sold at the roadside is a very common occurrence during this period.

 

26th February is also a significant day for the country as we remember that passing of PNG's first Prime Minister Late Great Grand Chief Hon Sir Michael Thomas Somare.
